BMW M5 E60 Review | Tow Truck Not Included

I have had one for 4 years now. When people ask, I simply state the obvious: I bought an engine, but it came with a car. This thing is fantastic. Like you said, as a second summer only car, I simply don't know what else I could get that would make me smile this much. Thanks a lot for the video ! (and knocking on wood, so far mine hasn't cost me a fortune !)

BMW Bloody Munted Workmanship . #Unfortunate . Why do Germans always make advanced technology that is prone to break down? Some battles in WWII their new technologically advanced tanks were so #reliabilitychallenged they lost more to breakdown than enemy fire 🤦🤷. Now that was, most unfortunate ....for them

The cargo box on the top is for spare parts, repair bills and blankets for staying warm while sleeping in the car because this fancy looking BMW is bound to break down in the middle of nowhere at anytime from experience. 🛠🚨🚑 🚔 🚧 I love how other owners of this BMW are trying to console themselves like they didn’t waste their money just because the car looks cool and expensive. lol I have 2 friends with this car, one has followed the maintenance schedule to the letter and always at the BMW dealerships- it’s currently sitting at the shop with another problem that can’t be diagnosed and it’s his 2nd car/ part time car barely ever driven. The other friend’s car is in a lot also broken down waiting to be towed away. They are both original owners. I’ve heard them cry while wasting money and dealerships weren’t giving the owners enough money as a trade compared to what they paid even with depreciation value(I guess all dealerships know this is a money pit) 😂😂

You can get one for even less than $15,000 if you're willing to do some work. Rougher examples can be found for under $10,000 all day long. Right now at my shop, my friend and I are working on an E60 M5 that we got for less than $2k... sure it needs a new engine, but we've found a cheap rebuildable engine so that'll be put in soon, along with new rod bearings, clutch, and a bunch of other things.

I love my ‘06 M5 and would hate to part with it, but the previous owners were negligent and all the money I could put in it could go to a different car. I may keep it but trading it in for an F10 M5 or a few years old GTR. I’d miss hearing my Eisenmann race mufflers though. Also I don’t find the SMG to be that bad. It took a bit of time but I’ve learned to work the throttle to smooth out it’s shifting. If you think it’s jerky, try driving a cold 13 speed sometime. Lol

Ok video but you have to stop the bullshit just because its popular to say it. Plenty of E60 M5's including mine, have only had one owner, and few if any break downs, certainly no more the any other car I ever had. It's just sexier to say it breaks down a lot but it simply its not true. Some may break like any other model, but it sure as hell its not typical. No russian roulette here, when it does need service find a knowledgeable mechanic which will bring rates to normal rate. Another bullshit statement I caught is the 100k that has been beat down to 15k, rubbish, plenty of owners know have to drive the car hard responsibly, warm it up and rev up at the proper times and for a proper length which the car can take without 'beating it down'. The asian guy is in love with his sentence and keeps saying like a parrot. BY THE WAY , ITS MY DAILY DRIVER, NO PROBLEMS. Love the SMG feel, its quicker then using a clutch, first gear can feel a little jumpy but its only the first second and you learn to finesse that bit. Funny the reviewer said it was archaic, yet he doesn't own the car and only drove it for a day. I am an experienced E60 M5 driver and can tell you that it is superb, not archaic at all. Yes, new ones maybe better and I hope they are after 12 years of updates but this one certainly feels awesome, strong precise and tight. Careful to be influenced by the FEAR and inexperience of people who don't own the car.

Vor 10 Tage

+savagegeese I agree with that. It does take time and patience to find a good one but they are out there. Remember most people who spend 100k on a car tend to care for it and have the means to do so. Many don't sure, I agree with you. But if someone has the patience, say give yourself a 6 months to a year, you will find 3-4 to pick from like I did and you will have a good experience. I also totally agree with your last statement, but there is certainly room for my experience if you are willing to give the time it takes. I can tell you it was worth every second. Good day, and thanks for taking the time to look into this awesome car. That should be said.

Vor 9 Tage
savagegeese
savagegeese

+31acruz Lets just leave it at that. Its going to be a lot of work finding a good one and that is my point. This is not some mass market vehicle that was in the hands of people going from point A to B and most people who leased them up front beat them. And thats why most people would have bought it. Now 10 years its mostly sloppy seconds. You are in the 1% who had the time and patience to find a perfect example. So its absolutely reasonable for us to warn people about shopping for one. You buy a 15k M5 and pop a motor its gonna cost you 20k. You pop a motor on a 15k Honda Accord etc. It gonna cost you 5k. This is not a normal used car purchase.

Vor 10 Tage
31acruz
31acruz

+savagegeese You are missing the point, an abused car, Honda, Toyota, Audi or BMW will be a nightmare period. Yes I agree it takes more time to find a good one, I usually average 3 months to find one. But they are worth it. I did take a look at the market and a whole year looking for mine. In the end I flew to LA to pick it up and drove it all the way back to Michigan trouble free. I have had 5 BMW's 3 series, 5 series M3 and now M5 and this car is no more problematic than any of them. Yes it can be more expensive if the owner is a fool and the car is abused, we have made that point repeatedly already. But all I am saying is leave room for the possibility that people can do what I did, take your time, find the right car, from the right owner and own it responsibly trouble free and happy. Meanwhile the driving experience is nothing short of 'phenomenal". And honestly, I did not pay a premium for it compared to other ones, was a steal

Vor 10 Tage
savagegeese
savagegeese

+31acruz The cars you are describing are few and far between. These are not Honda Accords people don't drive them lightly. There are a limited production car and the manuals are almost impossible to find. If you do happen to find a one-owner car ( which I haven't been able to do in the past 2 month) be prepared to pay a hefty sum for it. The used Market is junk take a look at it. Which is why I stand by my point you're rolling the dice by buying one of these, and if you're planning on making it your only car be prepared. If you think that's bad advice well then we're never going to agree. I've been through BMW ownership myself and I'm not willing to make the excuses for the car like a lot of Fanboy and diehards will. Amazing car if you're not putting a ton of miles on it and I stand by that as well.

Vor 10 Tage
31acruz
31acruz

+savagegeese Just because the car you drove had problems does not make it typical. Seems to be it has been abused, you can find Honda Accords that have been abused and can be nightmares. Nobody is asking you to say that buying an "abused" car of any make is responsible. You should simply not brush all E60 M5's with the same brush because your experience was bad. Better say, purchase one for a single owner preferably, one that was adult owned, not tracked, not abused and kept up the maintenance flawlessly like I did. I have a folder with every thing ever done on the car, in all my 57,000 miles I've only had to replace the alternator and the throttle actuators (the previous owner only replaced a battery) which took a morning and was less than a thousand bucks. I spent more on my SAAB in that same period of miles. I do agree if you buy a bad one of course will be expensive and you made that point. But you shouldn't generalize and you should point out that if one takes the time to find choice, well cared for M5's you will do well. As far as the transmission, its not a competition. People don't care, I certainly don't, how much modern the new one is. What smart people and I care about is HOW IT FEELS, having had Porsches all my life, and driven Ferraris and Lotuses and Alpha Romeos I can tell you that this transmission feels awesome. Its long winded like a Porsche, quick and precise. Have they done better ? hope so, but the point remains this transmission feels awesome and I look forward to going through the gears everyday. That's the point. In contrast I recently drove a Mazda offering and the feel of "that" , hesitant, ill timed, ill ratio, pathetic response of a transmision drove me crazy in minutes, I was ready to kill somebody by the time I stopped driving that monstrosity, by the way it was a 2018 year model.

Its the same thing like with the Audi RS6 (C5). On paper they sound awesome, you get a very luxurious, insanely fast german upper class daily autobahn hammer with a 4.2 liter twin-turbo v8 and all wheel drive. But in reality you get a fairly old, outdated car where you have to remove the whole engine and transmission every time you want to do even just the most basic of maintenance. And to be perfectly honest, something like a Mk7 Golf GTI would probably be quicker in most situations.

I just think this car is way too overhyped and I thought it was a lot slower than people give it credit for. Maybe I was spoiled by the other cars I drove, however I got to drive from the same generation of cars the S6 with the v10 as well and I felt that it was a lot more driver oriented when in sport mode and the engine sounded loads better on the S6 than that M5. My two cents.

I own a white bone stock 2009 E60 M5. This car was a decade a ahead of its time and it represents the pinnacle of the naturally aspirated BMW era before Euro emissions killed all NA development. The main issue with this car is it was supposed to be a luxury cruiser that occasionally behaved like a super car but in reality its a super car that occasional behaves like a luxury cruiser. Also, in hindsight, owners figured out how this car SHOULD be maintained and driven but by then they already had 50k badly maintained miles and problems. If you change the oil every 8-10k miles like BMW said, you will change bearings at 40-60k mikes. If you punch the throttle light to light every chance you get and don’t lift to feather the throttle like a manual tranny, you will get a $4000 SMG pump failure very soon. If you don’t top off the oil when the V10 needs that half quart, the bearings will wear like crazy. No one that owned these back then knew these maintenance nuances so lots of them became a maintenance nightmare and car got a bad rep. Don’t buy these thinking you can maintain it like a Honda, you need to maintain it like a race car with 4 doors. Yes it costs more to maintain but when done right driven right, these are solid cars. And forget the manual 6-speed, this engine was designed with 7 gear ratios in mind, the 6-speed was an afterthought and does not do the V10 justice, you need to drive the SMG like a bat out of hell to get what this car is all about. 50 years from now anyone that ever drove this car will always say “fuck that car and that v10 was amazing”. E39 was great, F10 lots of power, even the F90 is amazing, but this beast was simply BMW at its very best and pinnacle if it’s company DNA. There will never be a sedan or BMW like this one ever again, truly a unicorn.

I just want to say great review and I agree with you about having some money set aside when you buy this car. I own a 2006 E60 M5 with 142,000 miles on it and it runs perfect. You name it I've replaced it. It is my daily and have no complaints. Yes, maintenance is expensive but worth it. Buying one with low miles is the worse one to buy because it will need minimum $10,000 of repairs after you buy it. That is why you see them for sale with 76,000 miles or less. People trying to sell them to avoid that cost. You are right about buying one with a warranty. I advise to buy one from an owner that has already done ROD BEARINGS, CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL & SMG PUMP OR AT LEASE 2 OF THE 4. Forza Auto Repair
Forza Auto Repair

I generally don't comment on reviews because this is just one persons opinion, and he is entitled to it. But, I do in fact own a 2010 E60 M5, and I like it. I have owned numerous exotics and we repair and service exotics at Forza, so I have some frame of reference for an opinion, and some fact. The E60 M5 is an exotic. Anyone who has owned an exotic know they require special care, extended warm up times, exact maintenance, and any form of neglect will cause serious repairs later. However, as far as exotics go, it is reliable and durable. Try treating a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Maserati in the fashion of the M5 and you will cry a river of tears in repair cost. As far as the SMG goes, it actually pretty good and has improved. It is not as good as a PDK or other current production cars. You can't complain about it being slow, if you have it on a slow setting. The transmission itself is robust and shifting it hard will not damage it. In fact quicker shifts extend the life of electro-hydraulic transmission clutches, like the SMG, F1, Egear ect. Most people who prefer, or think they prefer a convention standard to one these system, are ignorant of their purpose. First they shift faster than a human can, if you have it on the fast setting naturally. But most importantly, the rev match on down shifts, better than most humans. Both reasons are why they are used in Formula 1. If you are buying an M5, the rules are the same as an exotic. Find the best example you can, a pay for a thorough inspection, and be prepared to afford the cost of up keep. If you buy one for $15,000.00, be prepared to spend three times that to make it right. There are few things in life more expensive than a cheap exotic.

Vor 12 Tage
savagegeese
savagegeese

I agree with you for the most part and I think your advice given your repair history is how people should look at the vehicle. But I don't see it as an exotic vehicle it's a 5 series with an amazing motor in it. And if you look at auction prices and prices a general it's a 15 to $25,000 car tops. It's a reflection of what the car really is. Sadly however it has an exotic repair price tag. And you do have to treat the motor and transmission with respect in terms of care.

As a current owner of an E46 M3 and someone who has driver the E60 M on a fairly regular basis... I can tell you that the SMG trans can be a total sweet heart if driven properly!!! Just sayin'...

Piece Of Shit Car! American traitors everywhere. I do not understand why Americans see these cars better than American cars.

The e60 M5 is not for me, but it did help give birth to the e92 M3. I don't know why you sold the e92 M3? Like you mentioned, own a M and keep a daily beater car.

Fantastic review. I’m fortunate (I think) to have one of the 1,364 E60 M5s with a manual trans as my daily driver. A joy to drive for all of the reasons Goose mentions. As a relatively large naturally aspirated car, it has a Jekyll and Hyde quality to it, as it can feel sluggish and heavy at low revs in normal driving mode, then like a wild animal once you open it up in 500S. As to the much-bemoaned maintenance and repair costs, I think they’re priced in at this point. I purchased this decade-old supercar for $25k and within a few months dropped another $8k or so on a thermostat, rod bearings and other repairs/preventative maintenance. (Some people think the bearing issue is inflated, but some of mine were well into the copper before 60k.) For this level of enjoyment, though, I consider $33k to be money well spent. But that doesn’t mean I don’t drive in fear for all of the reasons Goose mentions, even with none of the big ticket SMG/bearing problems to worry about. The thing is the automotive version of the sword of Damocles. Love it or leave it.

I own one now. It’s Sitting in the Garage. Needs o2 Sensor. $440 plus for just one. Runs bad because of the o2 sensor and when the plugs go bad the mofo misfire religiously.

2 piston, floating point front calipers on an M5, WTF? The E55 has 8 piston, 4 pads each, aluminum, fixed front calipers.

Couldn’t find a better example? What a piece of shit. A lot of e60 M5’s have been ruined by design.
