BMW M5 E60 Review | Tow Truck Not Included

I have had one for 4 years now. When people ask, I simply state the obvious: I bought an engine, but it came with a car. This thing is fantastic. Like you said, as a second summer only car, I simply don't know what else I could get that would make me smile this much. Thanks a lot for the video ! (and knocking on wood, so far mine hasn't cost me a fortune !)

+Djork Solo I think there's multiple answers to your questions. Some of the best cars in my opinion are the least disposable. however that does not mean they're the best cars to drive or had the best features or styling. Many of the Lexus products fall into that category. Or for example if you take some of the late 90s Hondas and Toyotas you can literally run them 400 500,000 miles without an engine rebuild. To me that is so important and is disappearing. But then you look at a car like the McLaren 720 or 570, carbon tub active aero and suspension they are engineering masterpieces but most the owners will never put over 30 to 40 thousand miles on them so you'll never really know how big of a time-bomb they are. There are cars like the lotus Elise and lotus exige which our purpose built from the ground up, that are a nightmare to work on and super expensive to repair. One of the reasons why I like the Ariel atom so much is it's just simplicity in engineering, the less-is-more approach is always the best combination of reliability and performance. But we don't live in that era of cars anymore.

+savagegeese Just a question straight like that .. what's the best car in all qualities ever built for you ? I'm curious of your answer, if you can see this. Thanks.

+Julien Lardy Maybe because you're using it as a Grandpa ! Go on track and push it hard, and you will know and encounter the famous problems of this car ! After, of course some problems was fixed, as the SMG II problems etc ... so if you wasn't the first owner, yeah, many problems was already done ! It costs a fortune, because german brands only give short warranty periods, and their parts are horribly expensives. So mostly you pay from your pocket all reparations !

This car is definitely only for mechanics. If you don't know shit about German engineering. Don't ever get this car. I love BMWs, and I know quite a bit about BMWs all around. But I still would avoid this even though I'd adore that car. I'd get a 2008+ 550i if anything. Great video. I'll enjoy watching others play with the V10 M5.

We liked your video If somebody "lives" with the E60M5 since the beginning for more than 13 years, has driven lots of other cars, still owning some.. the happiness which it gives you back is intangible and still every day pleasing and if needed breathtaking. The hole family is in love with this inconceivable piece of engineering :) The new one instead is faster in almost every category (except at high-speeds over 150 mls/h) and truly absolutely great, but... but if pushed, only the old E60V10 can still give me that feeling I seek, that unique sound, that hammering engine with that endless rpm, almost mind blowing, what a crescendo, without turbo, and with the "ancient" single clutch SMG I enjoy these organic brutal separate gear-changes, or softly if needed. Enjoy if you have one, buy if you haven't had one :) probably it will never be built a naturally aspirated V10 again in a limousine, the last of the Mohicans. Peace & Love

Kudos for giving people the full story on these cars. I am SO tired of reading gushing reviews in 'buff books' about BMW and other German cars that make no reference to the nagging quality issues and long term costs. In terms of reliability, they're some of the most overrated products on the market. You review is one of the first I've seen that gives people all the information needed to make an intelligent buying decision. Keep up the great work!

Thank you for this thorough review. As the owner of a naturally aspirated Porsche 944 S2, I have been pleased with this car but have been itching to purchase a new vehicle that offers some real power. I kid you not, the E60 sedan is one of the cars on my radar. I just want to be clear. If I purchase an authentic manual model with an extended warranty, would this then be a car that you would recommend purchasing? Or should I just stay away? I would love to get your feedback. I had an e92 that after 6 years of absolute love and affection at the level of "I'm keeping this car until gasoline is illegal", It threw a rod bearing on me without warning, in the middle of a cross country trip 3 states from my home. It will take me the better part of a decade to get back the money I lost to that car, I will never trust bmw with my money again. I also had brand new GS and R nine T motorcycles from them, their dealers are awful, BMW NA is awful, it's sad since I used to be "the beemer guy" but I was betrayed and I'm going by the fool me once mantra. The fact that the E46 blew motors, and every s85 s65 from the launch in 2005 to the end of production in 2013 had these problems is what makes me so bitter. BMW doesn't care, they knew they would last till 50k and after that they couldn't care less, you are on your own, have fun buying a new engine from us for 25k is their attitude. Before that car I had an '08 VR6 Audi TT and I tracked the hell out of it at least once a month for 2 years and not a single thing, down to plastic bodywork rivets ever broke on that car. Cars can be made right, BMW opts out of that idea.

Brutal V10M5

Let me make a comprehensive list for everyone before I read one more comment from people drawing conclusions who do not actually own the car. First a little history. Back when the V10 M5 was in the works, BMW was in the Williams Formula 1 group and was developing race cars. The original V10 they made produced almost 1400bhp and 900 pound feed of torque. This designed had to be later taken and somehow integrated in the bay of a 4 door luxury saloon that was not going to just be the first of its kind, but a car that had the reading spec of a formula 1 car. They had to use electronic systems (think bus system, ecu,.dme ,modules, sensors, electrically actuated throttle bodies etc.) to dumb down the engine and reduce its output as well as of course.. use more generic materials. The engine itself has no death, neither does the vanos if knowledge on proper maintenance is strictly followed by owners. Because it is such a finely tuned piece of engineering, one of the old golden great engines, think ( rod bearings-tight clearances, double vanos system, mechanical ingenious pump system ... etc) proper maintenance is huge key. If not.. you pay the price. For starters the 10W-60 oil is the oil that needs to be changed every 3500 miles or so not 10,000 like bmw suggests. Most important part... -proper warm up. You should always let the car idle a couple minutes. Then drive without revving past 2000-2500. As the engine warms up, and the oil begins to spread through every little tight crevice and corner you can rpm it. A bit higher.. 3000-3500 4000 max. When the engine has reached its operating temperature of the oil at 210 fahrenheit, the car can be revved to its glorious 8250 red line( 8600-8800 for some.models with the dinan tune. Costs and repairs Electronics gimmicks will always go out over the years if the car was neglected, not driven, battery changes were ignored proper checkups etc. A lot of folks who bought these new, simply couldn t abstain themselves from abusing the shit out of them before even warming them up, and very few are left on the market. Even fewer are found in a proper condition and less than that with the 6 speed manual. Many folks originally complained that the 6 speed manual is crap. But i found this to be simply not true. You need to know how to shift and revmatch and you can upgrade the gearbox as well as the clutch with a manual dual clutch system that pre engages and makes shifts smoother when you need them to be but also quick and agressive. This is one of the best engines ever made and it can be modded a lot if you re into that. It can safely reach 1000hp and be actually quite reliable if you properly maintain it. Here s the other thing, most super cars with exotic v10s out there experienced a lot more issues than this car. The reason you never hear about it is because many more people could afford and buy the m5 vs a ferrari or a lambo for example or a porsche 918. Any car if not properly understood( think tech under the hood) and improperly maintained, will ultimately prematurely fail. Ive personally seen a very neglected carrera gt that had many issues due to improper maintenance and neglected issues. It is a piece of tech made by humans for humans using materials humans make. It can never be perfect. Come.to terms with that about any car. And before I hear anyone, but my toyota reached 300,000 miles dont even bother. A regular A- B car is not a performance vehicle, it runs within specs that put much much much less stress on every engine component. Did you know for example why diesel trucks reach millions of miles on the clock? Key they are properly maintainted. fresh oil and all, they use materials in the engine bay designed to withstand more stress, they run at high pressure in the cylinder bay and thus the need for materials. For reference. When the m5 came out it costed 4 times less than a ferrari 430, had more bhp, twice as many doors and 10 times more luxurious. I really don t think it was bad value for the money at the time. Most of us buy a scrap one for 10k and expect it to be a 90 k undying supersedan with toyota reliability. Dream on... that s never going to happen with any high powered petrol engine car.

Why tf should I fear this absolutely amazing machine that could be worth nothing(30k loss) or go up in value by 20k in 5 years. This feeding frenzy of paranoid would be buyers freaking out abt “muh rod bearings” on message boards reached ludicrous mode long ago. I’ve actually had kids walk up to me and tell me my lower end was going to blow up! Most people talking about the rod bearings in this car have never owned or worked on one and in many cases couldn’t buy this car new or at these ridiculous prices. Alexandru Dragomir maybe it is my yank logic but for most Americans, rod bearings failures, vanos rebuild and bad throttle actuators are considered reliability issues. Not service items, but at this point it’s semantics. If you watched the entire video that was the ending point. It’s a exotic car if you treat it like one, and prepare yourself for it you can better prepare financially. At least in the states the high cost of ownership(I say reliability issues you say service costs) are why most of these cars on the used markets have 4+ owners. Again by American standards your opinion is not a widely held one.

Vor 2 Monate
Alexandru Dragomir
Alexandru Dragomir

this has to be american logic... so if i have problems with my car... its a general reliability issue.. if 0.5% of kids born with down syndrom. makes all kids with down syndrom. if you have 200 drivers on forums that have had rod bearings failure all e60 m5 have rod bearings issues. got it.. the video should have been. presented differently.. something like.. guy.. this car is amazing but as all high performance cars used as daily drivers requires some. extra care... if you treat this m5 as you treat a high performance car and not like your daily driver.. you will probably make 50k miles in 30 years therefor you should spend no money in 30 years.. however, if you do use it as your main driver... here is a list of what you need to do if the car has more than 50k miles for worry free another 50.000 miles ownership 1) rod bearings 2)theottle actuators 3)clutch kit 4)vanos internal pipe 5)check or replace vanos pump 6)check vanos. pressure every 3 months The cost for all this is about 6k...take this sum in budget.. this is a fair review

Vor 2 Monate
Jack H

Alexandru Dragomir again the car has a cost for having a high cost of ownership and is famously unreliable. Doesn’t mean it’s not a great car (good to drive) Essentially every automotive journalist says the exact same thing. Brain at road and track has enjoyed his car but clearly(unlike you I guess l) understands its limitations(famously unreliable for him). I love the e60 m5 but having been around enough real world owners who both have had all similar issues listed in this video. Ignorant assumes I haven’t done my research or don’t understand. The amount of engineering briefs and articles I have sorted through dealing with this car is mind numbing. I’m sorry someone had a negative opinion about something involving your “15k super car” and potentially warned less educated potential buyers of some of the woes. Again the video was mostly positive about the driving experience behind this car, just not about all the realities behind the ownership. No car is perfect, they all have flaws, and this cars flaws present itself in the cost of ownership section it’s a 15k v10 powered car so I guess what do you expect?

Vor 2 Monate
Alexandru Dragomir

+Jack H i apologise mate but your comment is purely ignorant... if add all the complaints regarding e60 m5 on the forums.they dont sum up to 200... this means. only a fraction of cars manufactured.. yet you tell me that just because mine is reliable. doesnt mean all. of them are.. mate.. its very easy... if you buy you m5 with another 5k budgeted for. preventative maintenance you get an extraordinary car which is very afforbable... show me any other perfoemance v10 with so many miles(daily drivers in many cases) that offers so much for. this amount of money... take any lambo with 20k miles..not.50k and ask the owner how much they spent on the car so far.. i bet they spent 3 x e60 m5s...

Vor 2 Monate

Alexandru Dragomir congrats you have a reliable car. read the other comments from other owners “ car has been a money pit” but has been fun. just because your particular example has been reliable doesn’t mean the rest of the market is. Hell this car broke again after this video was done, the original car doug was suppose to review took out its own motor. It’s a valid comment to make that if you aren’t careful buying this “cheap car” is like a reverse mortgage. It’s still a fun car, but not always the most reliable or cost effective. Hell if you spend 5 minutes on a owners forum have the comments are about rod bearings or any of the other various failures highlighted in this video. If you get upset someone criticizes your car online, maybe the internet isn’t for you? Food for thought

The other friend’s car is in a lot also broken down waiting to be towed away. They are both original owners. Doug Demuro just did a review of this same car...has Savagegeese shaken the big man’s game?

I highly doubt Doug pays attention to any other car channels.

You can get one for even less than $15,000 if you're willing to do some work. Rougher examples can be found for under $10,000 all day long. Right now at my shop, my friend and I are working on an E60 M5 that we got for less than $2k... sure it needs a new engine, but we've found a cheap rebuildable engine so that'll be put in soon, along with new rod bearings, clutch, and a bunch of other things.

M5: The $500 a night "Escort" you can request her "services" MAYBE ONLY ONCE A YEAR or you'll be living on the street and sleeping at bus stops. Has anyone tried to adapt a TREMEC T56 or TR6060 on one of these ? That would solve all auto trans problems.

I love my ‘06 M5 and would hate to part with it, but the previous owners were negligent and all the money I could put in it could go to a different car. I may keep it but trading it in for an F10 M5 or a few years old GTR. I’d miss hearing my Eisenmann race mufflers though. Also I don’t find the SMG to be that bad. It took a bit of time but I’ve learned to work the throttle to smooth out it’s shifting. If you think it’s jerky, try driving a cold 13 speed sometime. Lol

Ah such an engine. What car did you get to replace the E92? PS> Does this mean we'll think the Lexus Predator maws will be beautiful in a decade's time? :)

What the f*^k is that monstrosity on the roof of that M5 , I certainly wouldn’t put one of those eyesores on my V10 that’s for sure ...if I came home from work and found that on the roof the bolts would be loosened then foot to the floor foot on brake box in ditch .. job done ✅

This car is designed like the perfect getaway car for a heist or something. Room for 5 people, V10 engine, and a big trunk what else can you ask for 😂

You need to give the E39 a go. It's an M car with a stupid good engine without the reliability issues.

Can you please do a review on the 2019 Jaguar XE r-sport? This is an excellent car that I'm so interested in buying and I would love to see one of your amazing videos on it. It is because of your video on the Mazda CX-9 from last year that I purchased my new SUV. I would love to see what you come up with in your diagnosis of the Jaguar sedan. Thank you

Wrong BMW! You need to get a 2003 BMW M3-CSL edition. The CSL's S54B32HP engine is incredible. Search for series 3 episode 2 of Top Gear, and Clarkson does a good review of it. My 1st choice of engine. 2nd of course my turbocharged F20C. My 1st love, the Ford SHO V6, comes in 3rd. Thanks Yamaha :)
